Welsh Lady Bud Vase

Inspired by an old photo of my mum and her sister in their traditional Welsh dress. These cute little bud vases are the perfect gift for the Welsh home. They can also be used as reed diffusers and ornaments.

How they are made

Each lady slip cast in earthenware clay in a handmade mould from an original wheel thrown version. Once leather-hard, the pattern - which I screen-print using ceramic underglaze - is transferred. Leaving the paper transfer in place, I then paint the rest of the pot in blue underglaze. The transfer paper can then be removed, revealing the textile pattern. The pots are then left to dry a bit more before I can begin the sgraffito decoration. This is where I scrape away the blue underglaze to illustrate the lady.

The pots are then bisque fired to 1100oC, then washed and dipped in glossy transparent glaze before having their final firing at 1000oC.
